OWI and Driver’s Safety Plan

Throughout Wisconsin, persons convicted of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants, or related offenses, are required to complete an assessment of their use of alcohol, drugs, and prescription medications. The purpose of this confidential assessment is to determine whether a drinking or drug problem exists.  All assessments result in a referral to either an educational program or a counseling program.  This referral is called a Driver Safety Plan, which is a required component of Wisconsin’s Intoxicated Driver Program.

This course is a highway safety initiative within Wisconsin that aims to assist persons involved in alcohol/other drug-related traffic offenses to make permanent changes in their drinking and driving behavior and attitudes.  This course focuses on first-time OWI offenders and is typically in a group format. The emphasis is on education and changing their behavior. Each student develops a Personal Change Plan to prevent ongoing impaired driving. The client can request individual sessions in place of Group Dynamics, but this option can take longer due to the high level of requests.

The Multiple OWI Program is a specialized education course for individuals who have received two or more Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) charges. In addition to providing alcohol education, the course will focus on modifying the unhealthy attitudes and behaviors that foster repeated irresponsible impaired driving. The course emphasizes strategies and techniques that assist you in changing high-risk attitudes and behaviors related to alcohol and other drugs and driving.
