Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, or DBT, is an evidence-based hybrid of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness and Dialectics. Dialectics in DBT is a method of examining and discussing opposing ideas in order to find the truth. It balances acceptance and change. In addition, DBT focuses on the acquisition of skills in the following areas: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Interpersonal Effectiveness and Emotion Regulation. These skills teach people how to live in the moment, cope with stress in a healthy manner, improve relationships with others and regulate emotions. The main goal of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is to build a life worth living.
Based on the work of Marsha Linehan, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy was created to treat individuals diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and has been expanded to treat various diagnoses including Substance Use Disorders, Depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorders and Suicidal Behaviors.
Please note, Life Point Counseling does not currently offer Full Dialectical Behavioral Therapy programming, but some of our providers can offer DBT influenced therapy. Please visit the following link to view a brief movie from Marsha Linehan’s website illustrating DBT.
